perfSONAR Node Reference Implementation

Here are the ESnet reference implementations of it's perfSONAR hosts:

Note that if your campus or lab is only connected at 10G, this 100G design will be more than you need.

Current (~2021/22) 40/50/100Gbps Capable Design

The total cost of this server was around $4K in mid 2021.  This system was deployed on ESnet in 2022.

Configuration Details

Hardware description

  • Base System: Supermicro AS -1013S-MTR
    • Onboard Dual 10GB RJ45, Onboard VGA, Redundant Power, Onboard IPMI
  • Motherboard: H11SSL-i
  • CPU: AMD EPYC 7302P 16-Core Processor (3.0GHz base clock, 3.3GHz max boost)
  • Storage: 2 x SAMSUNG MZ7KH480HAHQ
  • Memory: 8 x 8GB DDR4 ECC/REG RAM (64G Total)
  • Network: Mellanox MCX556A-ECAT Dual Port Connect X5

 

We also tested and liked the following system, but due to supply chain issues, went with the above system.

  • Base System: Supermicro 5019P-WTR
    • Onboard Dual 10GB RJ45, Onboard VGA, Redundant Power, Onboard IPMI
  • Motherboard: X11SPW-TF
  • CPU: Intel Xeon Silver 4215R 8C 3.2Ghz
  • Storage: 2 x Intel S4610 480GB SSD - 3 DWPD
  • Memory: 6 x 8GB DDR4 ECC/REG RAM (48G Total)
  • Network: Mellanox MCX556A-ECAT Dual Port Connect X5

  • Storage: Seagate 1TB SAS 6GB/s, 7200RPM ST1000NM002
  • Memory: 4 x 8GB DDRIII 1600 ECC Only Certified Memory (32GB Total)
  • Network: Intel X520-SR2 10GB Dual SFP+ with Dual Optics
