The ESnet Wireless Edge program supports a wide range of services for remote site and field science design, planning and operations. Many of our services are provided to the DOE & scientific community at no charge.

1) Site Analysis, Engineering Advice and Coverage Mapping (remote)
Need help figuring out how to deploy a remote site sensor system or plan out a wireless communications link as part of either a local- or wide- area data mobility scenario? Need help with a proposal, figuring out what technologies exist, or want some help predicting performance? We're happy to help - see the link above for more information. We are always happy to provide a remote consultation at no charge to help assess wireless deployment strategy, and help solve data mobility challenges.
2) Wireless Testing and Technology Evaluation
We're constantly evaluating new capabilities for wireless data mobility, and looking for new solutions. If you are interested in any kind of wireless data solution (be it LoRA, free space optical, mmWave, cellular, non-terrestrial, or anything else) as part of implementing your scientific workflow, we're delighted to share knowledge or collaborate.
3) MultiSim and Commercial Carrier Solutions
Commercial cellular can be the right mobility solutions for data or control plane scientific sensor applications. ESnet supports multisim solutions, allowing you to switch carriers on devices remotely, either for robustness or to test specific location actual data rates available from carriers.
Need more bandwidth (especially uplink) for a limited period of time than you can get from a single LEO terminal, like Starlink? We can ship a deployment box allowing you to load-bond up to 5 terminals, along with whatever commercial cellular is available, for a limited time. Get the data mobility you need for an event or short term data collection campaign, and then ship it back to us.
5) ESnet Remote Performance Wireless Monitoring
ESnet operates a robust perfSonar environment, allowing us to monitor, diagnose and help troubleshoot connectivity issues. We can extend this coverage to your wireless site via an ESnet Wireless Edge measurement unit, designed to use minimal power and bandwidth resources, while it collects and sends back connection health information to our network operations center.
6) Private Cellular Support and Coordination
Interested or need to deploy private 4 or 5G cellular in a remote location to support drones, wide area coverage, or specific cellular features (ultra-low-latency, slicing, etc)?
We've operated cellular systems in a variety of remote environments, and we're happy to assist, support, or provide coverage to you, depending on your needs and sponsorship. We also support a cellular core-in-the-cloud you can attach your Access Points to, possibly at lower cost/effort than provisioning your own core.
Depending on your needs and scientific sponsor, ESnet can also support your Citizen Band Radio Service (CBRS) private cellular networks a variety of ways.
7) Co-Design and Greenfield Site Support
Depending on your needs and scientific sponsor, we can deploy resources and equipment to support your own power and wireless LAN/WAN networking sites, to help ensure your science is successful.
