ESnet's Wireless Edge Program

The ESnet Wireless Edge program helps scientists span the gap between remote locations and ESnet's fiber backbone.

October 1, 2025

Background: Science doesn't always happen at National Laboratory sites. Increasingly, advancements in resource management, energy production, and a host of other DOE objectives depends on extending data mobility to remote site locations, or to support data collection from mobile systems.

Extending ESnet's fiber optic infrastructure is not always feasible or cost-effective, and commercial wireless options can be inconsistent, expensive, or poorly optimized for the needs of DOE scientists. A lack of reliable, dedicated wireless connectivity can, under these circumstances, hinder scientific progress and/or result in inefficient data mobility solutions.

ESnet's Wireless Edge: The Wireless Edge program to provide technical support, standardized wireless data backhaul solutions, and guidance on utilizing commercial wireless services. The initiative is primarily service-oriented, focusing on knowledge sharing, co-design engagements with scientific programs, providing contracting efficiencies (such as through bulk or master payer purchases), and network performance monitoring. In situations where commercial options are inadequate, ESnet may provide direct technology assistance.
